Cher recently made news by announcing that she would not participate in the debate if elected, although her election will not affect her determination, as was proven two years ago when she announced the Hall, but Parton is not removed from the vote. despite his expressed desire to do so. The country star came but ultimately accepted her rise, as many believe Cher did.
However, Cher seemed adamant at the time, declaring in December on “The Kelly Clarkson Show”: “You know, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a dollar. I am a million… I will never change myself. mind. They can just go-know-what themselves.
O’Connor is the nominee that has been on the minds of music fans lately, as his death on July 26, 2023 will no doubt have an impact on voters. O’Connor’s first album was released in 1987 – the same year as Tracy Chapman, another person who would have been a candidate for the ballot if he had met a little later. the nominating committee and saw an outpouring of love for him around the Grammys. .
Osbourne is the only candidate who is already a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 2006 as a member of the group Black Sabbath.
Of course, many eyes will be on Oasis, to see if the famous Gallagher brothers can fight the party for a while or, if not, will stand on the same stage to accept. (There are stories of estranged bands reuniting at induction ceremonies, including Talking Heads in 2002 and the original Heart line-up in 2013, though the Hall failed to getting other groups, like ABBA, to do a reunion show. .)
Frampton’s induction will carry extra emotional value, as the ’70s rocker is currently on a farewell tour, doing his job while he may suffer from the side effects. myositis (IBM), an autoimmune disease that affects the muscles.
O’Connor wasn’t the only one to die recently. Kool & the Gang lost drummer/co-founder George Brown less than four months ago, in November 2023. (Ronald “Khalis” Bell preceded him in 2020.)
In addition to Cher, Foreigner’s founding singer Lou Gramm is another nominee who has recently complained about the Hall’s absence, though he didn’t go so far as to vow to boycott the event. “It has nothing to do with our music or how many hits or fame or anything like that,” Gramm said in an interview on “The Rock Shop With Ralph.” 鈥淚t’s a private thing that we’re not in… It’s a private conversation between the man who owns Rolling Stone and Mick. [Jones]. It’s very young, everything, and I don’t think it’s going to get any better. I think it will stay that way. I think we were set an example.” (Gramm was referring to former Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, who didn’t run the Hall or the magazine for years; she’s stepping down in 2020. Wenner denied any wrongdoing ‘hatred of Foreigner and claimed to be a friend of Jones’.]
Voting by the voters in the Hall will be done from now and the winners will be announced at the end of next April.
The ceremony will be held at a date yet to be determined in the fall, in Cleveland; like last year, it will be streamed live on Disney+ and then updated for an ABC special at a later date (with Hulu availability starting the day after the special airs) . The launch party for the last Chamber was held in October, and the ABC version was released in the New Year.
Players can receive a nomination 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording.
Among those returning to the polls, A Tribe Called Quest has been nominated twice before, and Blige, Jane’s Addiction, Eric B. and Rakim and Dave Matthews Band have been in it once. A Tribe Called Quest is the only one of the 2023 nominees to make a return attempt in 2024. The group was also on the ballot in 2022, due to that’s how willing the presenting committee is to see hip-hop collaborations enter it. is not reduced.
The number of people nominated and running for office varies from year to year. In 2023, seven honorees were elected out of 14 nominees, one less than the number found in this election.
This is the rare year that none of the nominees are selected in their first year of participation. Among the first-timers on the ballot, Cher has been eligible since 1991; Kool & the Gang, since 1995; Frampton, since 1998; Foreigner, since 2003; Osbourne, since 2006; Sade, since 2010; O’Connor, since 2013; Kravitz, since 2015; Carey, since 2016; and Oasis, starting in 2020.
Among the repeat nominees, Eric B. & Rakim have been inducted since 2012 (the same year they were previously nominated); Jane’s Addiction since 2013 (they were previously nominated for the class of 2017); Tribes called quests until 2016 (previously returned home in 2022-23); Blige since 2018 (her previous appointment was in 2021); and Dave Matthews Band from 2020 (which is the year the group’s previous nomination arrived).
While the Rock Hall seems to be on a roll with surprise nominations and inductions for country music, recent wins for Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson have not been followed by anything. what was offered in this category this year. Despite speculation that Loretta Lynn or Merle Haggard might be next, the Hall’s selection committee appears to prioritize living inductees over past ones, O’Connor and other members of the Kool & the Gang though.
